MY HAIR STORY EPISODE 2

EPISODE 2 CHILDHOO MEMORIES : WHEN I STARTED TO HATE HEAT

BECAUSE I was crying all the time and avoiding to let people style my hair,My MUN decided to use the hot comb to relaxed my hair. I am sure for some people it reminds them something, especially if you are of my generation.
IT consisted of an iron comb that you put on the flame of your cooker, add some oil on the hair for some sort of protection then when it is hot enough or for some it has to be red, you just combed your hair and it became straight. The problem with me was that I was scared of the heat or to be burn especially When you have to stay still.

EVEN today I can remember the smell of the burned hair but more than that I remember to scream to death when the Hot Comb was close to my skin because I can feel the heat and smell the smoke.
After a” scary” séance, my hair were soft ,shiny and of course straight. So easy to comb, no more crying and no need to put thread on it. Yes, it was cool untilYou have to wash it and of course “the magic” stopped and my hair were back To normal, meaning nappy (don’t have a problem with this word, I am a French speaking African so in my ears it sounds so sweet and nice).

MY MUN repeated the experience only twice, first because I was too scared and she noticed some breakage in my hair lines and burns on my ears ( I was always moving, so no surprise). SO IT WAS BACK TO NORMAL FOR A LONG TIME.

In fact until I reached 18 years old.

OF COURSE IT WAS NOT ME AS A CHILD JUST ILLUSTRATION PICTURES BUT I USED TO DO THIS HAIRSTYLES.

Next episode 3: WHEN I HAD MY FIRST CHEMICAL RELAXER

  1. lol...thank God no one came close to me with that thing...someone would have gotten burnt.
You know my Aunt told me that way back in the day young Cameroonian girls used broken clay pots to stretch their hair out. They would put it on fire and when it got hot they'd use it just like the hot comb. So I guess hair stretching is a very old practice.

  3. I got my hair straightened with heat for the first time when I was about 8 or so. I hated the process but I loved seeing my hair so long and being able to comb it. It wasn't until my mother did my hair this way a few more times that I really began to dread it. Even as a child, I knew it wasn't worth the neck and scalp burns and having charred ears.

  5. My Aunt is one of those young Cameroonian girls :). I think they used to cut off their hair to go to school and so for that special May celebration, they'll use the broken clay pot pieces to stretch out their little Afros.
